While we are enjoying the Summer days, we can't help but notice our skin and hair are getting a little 'Fried'! Here're some tips to safe us from sun damage.
What is Sun-damaged hair look like?
UV rays break down the cuticle, leaving your strands dry, damaged and coarse. You’ll experience split ends and breakage, plus it's frizzy and difficult to style. For coloured hair, you will notice the sun and heat will take away the gloss, leaving your colour looks dull and lack shine.
Tips:
Pamper your Scalp: Restore the health of your scalp by an intense conditioning treatments and scalp massages.
Nourish your Strands: Get your hair trimmed by a professional stylist. Choose a shampoo that is nourishing.
Prevent (reverse) damage with a hair mask: A weekly mask to reduce frizz, soften strands and add shine to it.
Throw on a hat: A wide-brimmed hat (as opposed to a baseball cap) that covers your face and neck offers extra protection from the sun.
The Curl Line is not only popular for curly, wavy hair clients. It works awesome for clients who have coloured, chemically treated hair.

What About our SKIN??
Most sun damage occurs before the age of 18 and lives deep within the layers of our skin. As we age, these damages from the sun are slowly pushed to the surface, and show up as age spots, dark spots, hyper-pigmentation and wrinkles in later years. Continued unprotected exposure to the sun can cause even more damage and signs of premature aging begin to show on the surface.
Choose the right sunscreen for you:
Sunscreen is one of the keys to radiant, youthful-looking skin. Daily use may even lower your long-term risk of skin cancer. By reducing your daily sun exposure, sunscreen allows your skin time to heal and your immune system the chance to repair some existing damage. Wear sunscreen everyday and reapply every 2-3 hours if possible.
It is important to choose a sunscreen with “broad spectrum” protection. Look for sunscreens with the label protect against both UVA and UVB rays and with an SPF15 or higher.
There are two common types of sunscreens:
Physical sunscreens: They create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun. These products don't absorb into the skin but remain on the surface. Physical sunscreens are naturally broad-spectrum. The two most common ingredients in physical sunscreens are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They are generally used in natural sunscreen products and are ideal for sensitive skin, especially children's skin.
Chemical sunscreens: Adversely, these sunscreens contain chemical compounds that absorb UV rays that actually penetrate the epidermis and dermis. These chemical compounds include formulas like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone. Although chemical sunscreen is generally present in lightweight and less chalky, it’s important to note that due the chemical compounds in these products, they're more likely to cause sensitivity than physical sunscreens.
Don’t forget:
- Cover up. Wear a hat, sunglasses and light clothing (some with UV protection) when we have long hours in the sun.
- Limit your direct sun exposure. Seek shade, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
- Say ‘NO’ to tanning beds and sunlamps. Both can cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.

Treatments:
Microdermabrasion uses sterilized crystals to exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. This treatment offers patients a softening of fine lines and shallow wrinkles, fading of scars, stimulation of new collagen growth and reducing the look of hyper-pigmentation from the sun. Usually several sessions are needed for optimal results, and best results can be seen after 2-3 treatments. To book an appointment 604.876.5580
